Before Salsa, before Mambo, there was La Carioca!  This clip, from "Flying Down to Rio" (1933, RKO Radio Pictures) features Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, and a whole host of others, doing this wild and crazy dance.

 My guess is that these are all Americans, but note how the 2nd group's style seems more "authentic" from the standpoint of latin dancing as we know it today.
